A new addition to the MacBook Air lineup and a refreshed entry-level MacBook Pro are coming

Quick Hits
  • New MacBook Air models to come in 13- and 15-inch screen sizes
  • New M3 chip to have same 8-core CPU configuration like M1 and M2
  • Refreshed 13-inch MacBook Pro also planned

Apple plans to release new 13-inch MacBook Air and Pro models alongside the much-rumored 15-inch MacBook Air sometime this year, according to 9to5Mac. The three new laptops are expected to debut with Apple’s next-generation M3 chip.

The report corroborates Mark Gurman’s Power On latest newsletter, in which he delves into Apple’s future Mac and iPad plans. Although Gurman was not clear on the new MacBook Air lineup specs, 9to5Mac seemingly confirms what chip will power the new lineup.

The new Air models internally codenamed J513 and J515, have been in the works for some time now. Both models will be equipped with the M3 chip, which is expected to be the first Apple silicon processor built on TSMC’s new 3nm process. The chip will have the same 8-core CPU configuration much like M1 and M2, although the report was not clear on what to expect on the GPU side. The new entry-level Pro model, codenamed J504, should also have the same specs as the new MacBook Air models.

It remains to be seen when Apple plans to release the new laptops. DSCC CEO Ross Young has recently doubled down on his prediction for an early April launch for the 15-inch MacBook Air. TF International Securities Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo expects the new Air size to be released sometime in the second quarter of 2023. Gurman expects the new machines to debut sometime between “late spring and summer”, potentially at WWDC.

A WWDC launch makes the most sense, as Apple first debuted the redesigned MacBook Air and refreshed 13-inch MacBook Pro with an M2 chip in WWDC 2022.
