  • Dynamic media feeds aim to streamline content discovery
  • Revamped search tab and Smart Shuffle offer curated recommendations
  • Available for Android today and iOS soon

The landmark audio streaming service today debuted a thoroughly revamped version of the Spotify mobile app at their Stream On event.

According to Spotify, the new app design allows mobile users to “find personalized, curated previews of the songs, podcasts, and audiobooks” that they might enjoy. The new home screen features dedicated feed selection toggles for music, audiobooks, and an all-new “podcasts & shows” section. Each feed allows users to easily preview, share, or bookmark their favorite content with live previews.

A completely revamped search tab integrates robust tools for content discovery with short video clips and tracks curated for users based on their preferred genres. A brand new way to listen called “Smart Shuffle” draws inspiration from playlists that users have already created, to offer more personalized song suggestions that Spotify says will “match the vibe”.

Coming to podcasts for the first time, Spotify’s auto-play feature will allow users to forgo that awkward liminal period between podcast episodes, by automatically playing another relevant episode based on each user’s individual taste after the current episode ends.

Spotify published a quick video demo on their YouTube channel giving users a first look at the new app experience:

This announcement joins a number of features and tweaks that Spotify has been adding in the weeks leading up to their event, from the removal of the iconic heart icon to the addition of an AI DJ that harnesses the power of OpenAI to offer a truly personalized listening experience. At the event Gustav Söderström, Spotify’s Co-President and Chief Product & Technology Officer had the following to say regarding the redesigned interface:

the world today pulls us in a million different directions…So the most important thing we, at Spotify, can do for creators is to reduce the distance between their art and the people who love it . . . or who would love it as soon as they discovered it.

The new home screen layout will begin rolling out to Android users today with an iOS version launching in the coming weeks. The Spotify app is available on the App Store for free and requires an iPhone or iPad running iOS 13.0 or later.
