- Sensor issues to blame for apparent pushback
- Under-display Face ID still expected before under-display front camera
- Seamless all-screen iPhone design not coming till 2026 at the earliest
Apple is no longer expected to release its first iPhone with an under-display Face ID system in 2024, according to esteemed display-related analyst Ross Young.
In a tweet shared today, Young has taken back his earlier claims of at least one iPhone launching as soon as 2024 with under-display Face ID. Instead, he now expects the plans to have been delayed to 2025, at the earliest, owing to “sensor issues”. If true, the presumed iPhone “17 Pro” could be the first iPhone to embed Face ID components beneath the display. It is important to note that Young still expects a single-hole cutout in the display for the “17 Pro” front-facing camera.
Under panel Face ID is now expected to be pushed at least a year to 2025 or later due to sensor issues.

Young did not elaborate on whether he now expects an under-display front camera to be delayed in a similar fashion to Face ID. He had previously expected a seamless all-screen iPhone design with both Face ID and the front camera hidden under the display as soon as 2026 for the so-called iPhone “18 Pro”.
Based on the technical challenges remaining for under panel cameras to meet discerning brands quality requirements as well as panel manufacturers' cost requirements, I still believe this roadmap makes sense for the iPhone. pic.twitter.com/3ck5X3sVcL
