Haptic feedback will replace tactile buttons, according to a new report

Quick Hits
  • Volume buttons to be capacitative
  • Mute button to be 'pressing type'
  • If launched, this iPhone will be the first without any physical buttons
  • 2023 iPhone 15 line up: iPhone 15, iPhone 15 Plus, iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max

The iPhone 15 Pro, reportedly one of the devices Apple will launch this fall, is said to feature capacitive volume buttons and a “pressing type” mute button, according to 9to5Mac.

A source reported to the the publication that these buttons will no longer be physical, but capacitative ones, like the Home button from iPhone 7, which gave feedback to the user via haptics.

In the current design, the buttons are all physical and the mute switch also has a tactility to it. With the mute key reportedly changing to a pressing type, you might have to long press it to activate and deactivate the silent mode. This change in design and doing away with physical buttons may positively impact water resistance, although the source didn’t mention anything related to it.

iphone 15 render from 9to5mac

According to renders, there will be a single button for volume controls, and the direction of pressing will determine the output. The other significant change with the new models will be the switch from the proprietary Lightning port to USB-C port, as seen in the renders. This will be a major departure in design as the Lightning port will be retired after 11 years of run, since its debut in 2012 with the iPhone 5.

Additionally, all 4 iPhones are set to leave the notch that houses the FaceTime hardware and the selfie camera, for the new Dynamic Island from the iPhone 14 Pro. iPhone 15 and 15 Pro lineup is set to launch in September 2023, reportedly in pink, and blue for iPhone 15, and maroon-ish for iPhone 15 Pro.
