Spotify races to keep up with ever-evolving music streaming landscape

Quick Hits
  • Spotify HiFi has been ready to go since 2021 for Premium subscribers
  • Apple Music and Amazon Music "changed the industry" with lossless quality
  • It came at no extra cost for Apple Music and Amazon Music Unlimited subscribers

Hold on to your seats, music lovers, because Spotify’s highly-anticipated lossless experience, Spotify HiFi, is still in the works, and it’s expected to be “coming at some point.”

In a recent interview with The Verge, Gustav Söderström, co-president of Spotify, confirmed that despite being announced more than two years ago, the lossless experience is still on its way. While Söderström did not disclose any specifics regarding the launch date, he did explain that because the industry has changed since the initial announcement of Spotify HiFi, the company had to adapt to ensure that the lossless experience makes sense for both Spotify and its listeners.

Initially planned to launch as a premium tier by the end of 2021, the delay may be due to the introduction of free upgrades to add lossless music by competitors such as Apple Music and Amazon in addition to the release of high-fidelity music to other services. However, Spotify has been hard at work on the technical side of things, with the company re-mastering its entire music catalog in lossless quality and the feature being ready for over a year.

While Söderström did not provide detailed information on the reasons behind the delay, he did mention that Spotify wants to ensure the cost-effectiveness of the feature. Rumors suggest that Spotify will eventually offer HiFi as part of a more expensive plan, likely including additional perks such as spatial audio and other audiobook and podcast features.

While there’s no concrete launch date yet, it’s clear that Spotify is committed to delivering a top-notch listening experience for its users. In the meantime, Spotify has recently introduced a TikTok-inspired redesign, giving users something to enjoy while they wait for the arrival of lossless music.

Although Apple Music and Amazon Music have not undergone a redesign, they both have the missing Spotify feature, with Apple Music and the upcoming Apple Music Classical apps offering lossless quality and Dolby Atmos, and Amazon Music Unlimited also including ‘HD’ and ‘Ultra HD’ quality and Dolby Atmos at no extra cost.
