Apple today released iOS 16.4 release candidate for registered developers and public beta testers. This update represents the final build of iOS 16.4 before it is released to the public presumably sometime next week.

The public release of iOS 16.4 will add a myriad of new features including 21 new emojis and support for 5G standalone, which enables data speeds up to 3 Gbps on select carriers in some regions. Apple additionally opted to resurrect the page curl animation in the Books app, reintroduced the refreshed Home app architecture, added the ability to receive web push notifications using Safari, and revealed a new “Channels” menu for the Podcasts app. The latest beta expands support for Voice Isolation, a feature that reduces external noise during FaceTime and FaceTime audio calls, to cellular phone calls on the iPhone.

Subsequent developer betas succeeding iOS 16.4 will require a paid Apple Developer account, notably removing the ability to download and install developer software via a beta configuration profile, according to Apple. Non-developers will still have the option to test pre-release software by accessing public betas.

The iOS 16.4 release candidate additionally contains references to a new set of AirPods with model number A3048, and a new AirPods case with model number A2968, according to tech analyst @aaronp613 on Twitter:

Registered developers and public beta testers can install the update by visiting Settings > General > Software Update >Download and Install. A public release of iOS 16.4 is expected to coincide with the launch of Apple Music Classical on March 28. Apple also released updates across the following platforms:

  • iPadOS 16.4 Release Candidate
  • tvOS 16.4 Release Candidate
  • watchOS 9.4 Release Candidate
  • macOS Ventura 13.3 Release Candidate

The watchOS 9.4 release candidate adds support for Cycle Tracking with support for retrospective ovulation estimates and cycle deviation alerts for customers in Moldova and Ukraine. AFib History is now available for Apple Watch customers in Columbia, Malaysia, Moldova, Thailand, and Ukraine. The latest version of watchOS will also notably disable the ability to silence wake-up alarms with a cover to mute gesture in an effort to avoid accidental alarm cancellations while users are sleeping.

We will keep this article updated with any additional changes that we find in the latest iOS 16.4 build.
