  • Apple expansion comes after deals with MLS and MLB

Apple is reportedly eyeing a deal that would allow it to stream a selection of England’s highest division football league on its TV+ platform, according to a new report by Bloomberg.

The report explains that the contemplated deal would allow Apple to stream Premier League games in addition to lower league matches like Championship and League One that are ran by the English Football League.

Apple seams ready to take on Amazon’s Prime Video in the sports streaming sector, which already has rights to stream select Premier League games since the 2019-2020 season. If successful, EFL-ran games could debut on Apple TV+ in time for the 2024-2025 season. The Premier League can already be streamed on a plethora of services such as Sky, BT Sport, and Amazon. Premier League’s national streaming rights were sold for $6.3 billion covering 2022 to 2025.

Premier League streaming is dominated by Sky Sports and BT Sport, with Amazon Prime showcasing only 20 games out of a total 380 in a full season. Premier League broadcasting terms forbid exclusivity for any one provider, meaning that Apple won’t be able to gobble up the full stack of matches for itself.

Apple is already covering major sporting events in the US and seems ready to take on live sports beyond its own soil. Just yesterday, the company announced that MLB’s “Friday Night Baseball” is set to return to Apple TV+ in time for the 2023 season. While the games were streamed for free last year, they now require an active TV+ subscription. Apple is also streaming MLS games starting with the 2023 season in a decade-long $2.5 billion deal via MLS Season Pass.
