iOS 17 and "Reality Pro" AR/VR headset finally expected to debut

Quick Hits
  • New software expected for all Apple devices
  • New groundbreaking features for software unlikely
  • "xrOS" platform and "Reality Pro" headset to be revealed

Apple today announced the dates for its annual Worldwide Developers Conference. The 34th annual WWDC event will be held from Monday, June 5, to Friday, June 9, with a keynote held on Monday.

WWDC 2023 will be free-for-all and held virtually as was the case with the several past WWDC events. The headlining keynote will take place on Monday, June 5, at 10 AM Pacific Time. The keynote will be available to stream for free through YouTube, Apple Events website, and Apple TV app.

In addition to a new round of software releases for iOS, macOS, iPadOS, watchOS and tvOS, the company is also expected to finally unveil its “Reality Pro” AR/VR headset powered by an all-new “xrOS” platform. Hardware-wise, Apple could finally unveil its long awaited Mac Pro with Apple silicon, alongside 13-inch and 15-inch MacBook Air models and an entry-level 13-inch MacBook Pro. The new MacBook trio are expected to be powered by the M3 chip.

Like WWDC 2022, this year’s event will include a small in-person component, where developers, select members of the press, and invited students will be hosted at a special all-day Apple Park event on Monday, June 5. Attendees will watch the pre-recorded keynote and State of the Union. In addition, attendees will get to meet some of Apple’s engineers, attend Apple Design Awards ceremony, and other activities. Spaces will be limited and randomly allocated, however, and prospective attendees can apply to attend through Apple Developer website.

“WWDC is one of our favorite times of the year at Apple because it’s an opportunity to connect with the talented developers from around the globe who make this community so extraordinary. WWDC23 is going to be our biggest and most exciting yet, and we can’t wait to see many of you online and in person at this very special event!”

Susan Prescott, Apple’s vice president of Worldwide Developer Relations

Apple is expected to announce new versions of its software including iOS 17, iPadOS 17, macOS 14, watchOS 10, and tvOS 17. Last week, Bloomberg‘s Mark Gurman stated that Apple is planning iOS 17 to be more stable with less bugs, and “nice to have features” while still being less significant than iOS 16. The company is also expected to showcase its “xrOS” mixed-reality platform for the first time to accompany its “Reality Pro” AR/VR headset.

On the hardware side, Apple could announce new MacBook Air and MacBook Pro models with an all-new M3 chip. The company is also expected to complete its Apple silicon transition with the new Mac Pro with M2 Ultra a few months after missing its self-imposed two-year deadline that came and went in November 2022.

The star of this year’s WWDC would undoubtedly be its oft-rumored “Reality Pro” headset. Many details about the device have been adequately covered, including a $3000 price tag, more than a dozen outward and inward-facing cameras for eye and hand tracking for gestures detection and in-air typing, two M2-based processors, and two 4K micro-OLED displays.

Additional relevant information for developers will be shared in due time through Apple Developer app and website
