- Apple services will drop support for software released between late 2017 and early 2018
- All services will stop working except iCloud
- Push notifications will ask users to upgrade their software if applicable
- Only 4% of iPhones run iOS 14 and earlier
All of Apple’s software services excluding iCloud will no longer work on certain old releases of Apple platforms across the board, according to a tweet by a trusted source.
The tweet, courtesy of @StellaFudge, ascertains that devices running past software released between late 2017 and early 2018 will no longer be able to access any Apple service except iCloud. The software versions in question are:
- iOS 11 to iOS 11.2.6
- macOS 10.13 to macOS 10.13.3
- watchOS 4 through watchOS 4.2.3
- tvOS 11 through tvOS 11.2.6
The planned move will go into effect sometime in early May, adds the tweet. @StellaFudge also claims that affected users will receive push notifications prompting them to update their software to a more recent release.
An Apple support document released last month states a similar view, requesting users to update their devices to the latest software to continue using Apple services.
The number of active Apple devices running the aforementioned software versions is minuscule compared to the share of devices running up-to-date software. Per Apple’s statistics, 72% of all eligible iPhones run iOS 16, whereas only 4% run iOS 14 and earlier.
