Apple last year allegedly abandoned plans for a 27-inch pro-level, standalone monitor, with mini-LED backlighting technology, according to Ross Young, CEO of Display Supply Chain Consultants.
While some 27-inch mini-LED panels were in fact shipped last year, Apple ultimately “killed off” plans for the display “at least for now” said Young, who took to Twitter this morning to deliver this information to paid subscribers.
On another note, production for a 15-inch MacBook Air display panel, which began in February and increased in March, is set to ramp up again in April, suggesting that the launch of a large-screen MacBook Air could be imminent, also according to Young. Late April or early May could be the launch window for the new 15-inch MacBook Air, said Young.

Those looking for a higher-end external display from Apple will have to settle for the LED backlit panel of the Studio Display, or the still impressive but mildly-dated Pro Display XDR from 2019, which lacks built-in speakers, Apple silicon, and a webcam. In addition to the redesigned 13-inch MacBook Air with M2, announced last June, prospective MacBook Air owners may want to wait for the rumored 15-inch model.
