Apple plans the purported “action button” on the upcoming iPhone 15 Pro to control certain aspects of the Camera app. The rumored changes are courtesy of the same source who spoke of new features set for iOS 17.
In a series of tweets by @analyst941, the anonymous leaker claims that Apple is working to allow the new capacitive button to take photos and videos through the Camera app. This will replace the current mechanism of pressing either volume button to take a picture or record a video, which has been the case on all iPhone models.
All in all, the pressure-sensitive nature of the new button will allow the following use cases as described by the anonymous leaker:

- A light press will trigger the Camera app to autofocus
- A hard press will take a photo
- A hard and long press will start a video recording
The “action button” is also set to change how to power off the iPhone 15 Pro, adds the leaker. Instead of pressing either the volume button and the power button simultaneously to trigger the Power Off slider, the new pattern will involve pressing the “action button” and power button at the same time.
This week, analyst Ming-Chi Kuo reported that Apple has allegedly canceled plans for capacitive volume and power buttons on the iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max, citing “unresolved technical issues. However, @analyst941 still maintains that the new buttons are coming and Apple has yet to change its plans.
Apple is expected to announce the iPhone 15, iPhone 15 Pro, and the iPhone 15 Ultra this fall alongside new Apple Watch models.
