The firm is actively hiring iOS and Android engineers to build "mobile-first" apps

Quick Hits
  • Job openings on the Applied AI Engineering team
  • Roles offered for iOS and Android respectively
  • The roles describe early work on mobile experiences for ChatGPT
  • Vacancies language suggest Android app to be released first before iOS

OpenAI might be working on native ChatGPT apps for iOS and Android if recent job openings on the research firm’s website are any indication.

OpenAI is hiring experienced software engineers for iOS and Android in two open vacancies, respectively. The job description indicates that successful candidate(s) will join the ChatGPT team, formally known as the Applied AI Engineering team.

On the iOS side, the job description specifies that OpenAI is looking for an “experienced iOS engineer” to be one of the firm’s first mobile team members. The successful candidate will lay the foundation for OpenAI’s initial “mobile-first experiences.” Responsibilities include engineering the groundwork for “iOS products built internally on top of OpenAI models,” collaborating with the product design team for prototyping and testing, and preparing the “mobile platform infrastructure” necessary to release said products.

For Android, OpenAI is looking to hire multiple “founding Android engineers.” The role description and key responsibilities closely resemble that of iOS. Successful applicants will similarly assemble “Android products built internally on top of OpenAI models.” In addition, the team will join forces with the product design team to prototype and prepare the necessary infrastructure to test and release said products.

The particular wording of the vacancies refers to Android engineers in the plural form and a single iOS engineer. This suggests that OpenAI might prioritize the release of an Android ChatGPT app ahead of an iOS version. The iOS role is referred to as an “early member” of the mobile team, a description that is noticeably omitted from the Android-based position.

Last month, OpenAI introduced plugins support for ChatGPT. Plugins allow third-party developers to bring the power of ChatGPT to specialized use cases. Several unofficial apps already utilize ChatGPT on the App Store and Play Store. A recent example is Petey, an iPhone and Apple Watch app based on GPT-4.
