Taiwanese contract manufacturer Quanta Computer plans to open a new facility in northern Vietnam, according to an official government statement (via Reuters).
Quanta signed a binding agreement with the local authorities of Nam Dinh province, south of the capital Hanoi, to build the new factory in a dedicated industrial park. The new facility is set to have an area covering 22.5 hectares and would be Quanta’s ninth factory worldwide. The official statement did not report the factory’s cost, but local media estimates an initial investment of about $120 million.
Quanta primarily assembles MacBook Pros for Apple. The statement did not divulge details regarding the future facility’s manufacturing capacity nor the time it would take to complete its construction.
The new facility would be one of many new factories that Apple suppliers plan to operate in Vietnam and other Southeast Asian countries. Apple is reportedly exploring three new facilities for MacBooks assembly in Thailand, in addition to multiple new factories in India for iPhone and AirPods assembly.
