Apple will end support for the first-generation 9.7-inch and 12.9-inch iPad Pro models introduced in 2015 and 2016, respectively, with the upcoming iPadOS 17 update, according to a new rumor from iPhoneSoft.

According to iPhoneSoft, iPadOS 17 will not support the first-generation 9.7-inch and 12.9-inch iPad Pro models. The 12.9-inch iPad was the first iPad Pro to launch in 2015, and continues to be the largest iPad of all time. The smaller 9.7-inch model was added a year later and has been replaced with an 11-inch size.

Due to the reported drop of both models with iPadOS 17, the upcoming update will only work with iPad Pros introduced in 2017 or later. Similarly, the fifth-generation entry-level iPad, introduced in 2017, is also expected to be omitted from the upcoming update.

While all iPad Pro models, including the first-generation 9.7-inch and 12.9-inch models, are supported by iPadOS 16, released last fall, they don’t benefit from all new  of the new features. Features such as Stage Manager and others are limited to more recent iPads with more powerful processors.

iPadOS 16 was a minor update for the iPad compared to previous years, bringing improvements to multitasking, Stage Manager, stock Apple apps, a Weather app, and more. iOS 16 and iPadOS 16 share many of the same features and changes. However, iOS 16’s biggest change, a redesigned Lock Screen, did not make it to the iPad in 2022.

Apple is set to announce iPadOS 17 alongside iOS 17, watchOS 10, macOS 14, and updated Macs at WWDC 2023 from June 5 to June 9. Rumors suggest iOS 17 will be an interesting update with a redesigned control center, updates to the Wallet and Find My apps, and the possibility of interactive Home Screen widgets.
