Tata Group is set to become the latest India-based contract manufacturer to take orders from Apple to assemble iPhones in the country. The conglomerate will take on a small share of assembly orders for the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus, according to a new blog post by TrendForce.

The post claims that Tata Group has received orders from Apple to assemble roughly 5% of all units in 2023 for the upcoming iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus. In the process, Tata Group will become Apple’s fourth and smallest contract manufacturer, behind Foxconn, Pegatron, and Luxshare, respectively.

Tata Group was able to become an iPhone assembler due to its acquisition of a facility previously owned by Wistron, adds the post. This also signifies Wistron’s departure from contract assembly for iPhones. TrendForce also claims that this paves the way for Tata Group to take on more iPhone assembly orders starting in 2024.

The post also claims that Foxconn and Pegatron will assemble the higher-end iPhone 15 Pro, whereas Foxconn will assemble the iPhone 15 Pro Max in addition to Luxshare. Foxconn will primarily assemble the base iPhone 15 with a minority of orders from Luxshare and Tata Group. The iPhone 15 Plus assembly will be handled by Luxshare, Pegatron, and Tata Group, respectively.

Apple is increasingly growing its manufacturing and sales presence in India as it views the country as the next growth opportunity following marker maturation in China and faltering Sino-US relations. The company posted record-breaking revenue in India in Q2 2023 and opened its first two Apple Store locations in the country last month.
