- The ChatGPT app has claimed the #1 spot on the "Top Charts" list
- A ChatGPT app for Android is coming soon
- The app will expand to additional countries "in the coming weeks"
OpenAI’s ChatGPT iPhone app has already climbed to the #1 spot on the App Store’s Top Charts list in the United States less than 24 hours after its launch.
Though the app is free, users can optionally purchase a ChatGPT Plus subscription as an in-app purchase for $19.99 per month. The ChatGPT app also supports Sign in with Apple via a user’s Apple ID. The sign-in system offers a more private and secure way to access ChatGPT on the iPhone, as it does not require you to share your email address or other personal information with the app or website.
With the app, users can chat with the advanced ChatGPT language model, which has grown immensely in popularity recently, without the need to go the OpenAI website. ChatGPT is trained on a massive dataset of text and code and can generate text, translate languages, write different kinds of creative content, and answer a broad range of questions with informative and contextual feedback.
OpenAI has stated that it is working on adding new features to ChatGPT in the near future. These features could include the ability to generate different creative text formats, like poems, code, scripts, musical pieces, emails, letters, etc. OpenAI has also shared in a blog post that it is working on making ChatGPT available on other platforms, such as Android, soon. The ChatGPT app is additionally expected to expand to additional countries “in the coming weeks,” according to the post. The success of ChatGPT is a sign of the growing popularity of large language models among average consumers.
The official app follows an influx of fake ChatGPT apps flooding Apple’s and Google’s respective app platforms. A report this week from WIRED revealed the extent of how popular the fake apps had become, all promising access to OpenAI’s advanced ChatGPT language model. The apps often entice users with short free trials and access to less advanced generative AI language models before eventually charging them monthly and annual in-app subscription fees.
