ProMotion will no longer be an exclusive to Pro iPhones

  • iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Plus will reuse panels from iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max
  • iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus will stick with 60Hz 6.1 and 6.7-inch panels

Apple plans to incorporate its ProMotion display technology with a variable refresh rate of up to 120Hz in entry-level iPhone models in 2025, according to trusted display analysts Ross Young of DSCC.

In a tweet seen by Supercharged, Young outlines his predictions for the iPhone’s display over the next several years, including plans for up until 2025. He claims that Apple will finally release non-Pro iPhones with the variable refresh rate technology starting with the tentatively-named iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Plus, thus expanding ProMotion to the entire iPhone lineup. The move will be facilitated by a switch to Low-temperature Polycrystalline Oxide (LTPO) displays, a change from Low-Temperature Poly-Silicon (LTPS) panels currently present on all non-Pro iPhones.

Apple first introduced ProMotion on the 10.5-inch and 12.9-inch iPad Pro in WWDC 2017. The technology allows the display to dynamically change its refresh rate based on the displayed content, with a maximum refresh rate of 120Hz. The iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max were the first iPhones to feature ProMotion with a variable refresh rate between 10Hz and 120Hz. With the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max, Apple updated the feature allowing a refresh rate as low as 1Hz, enabling features like the Always-On display.

The iPhone 17 display will also increase in size, similar to the rumored increase for the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max. Young’s roadmap implies that the base iPhone 17 will reuse the displays set to be introduced on the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max, while the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus will continue to use non-ProMotion displays with the current 6.1 and 6.7-inch sizes. The iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max are said to feature slightly larger 6.3 and 6.9-inch displays and a moderately taller 19.6:9 aspect ratio.
