Apple previewed its next major software releases at its WWDC 2023 keynote two weeks ago on Monday, June 5. The company unveiled iOS 17, macOS 14 Sonoma, iPadOS 17, watchOS 10, and tvOS 17, in addition to the all-new visionOS powering the Vision Pro headset.
The first developer betas for all of Apple’s existing software platforms were released just a few minutes after the company concluded its WWDC keynote. Now, two weeks after the first betas, you may be wondering: when are the new betas for iOS 17 and iPadOS 17 coming out?
According to Will Hains’s Thinky Bits blog’s interactive timeline for iOS releases, there’s a period of approximately 15 days between the release of the first and second betas for major iOS updates. iOS 10 had the biggest time gap, with its second beta coming out 22 days after beta 1. On the other hand, iOS 4 had the shortest development cycle of any iOS release, with only 12 days between its beta 1 and beta 2. If iOS 17 follows the average 15-day period as previous iOS versions, we should see its second beta released tomorrow Tuesday, June 20.

To reiterate, here are the dates Apple could opt to release the second betas of iOS 17 and iPadOS 17 based on development cycles of previous major iOS releases:
- Typical two-week schedule: Monday, June 19
- 17-day schedule like iOS 16: Thursday, June 22
- 15-day schedule, average of all prior iOS versions: Tuesday, June 20
Second and subsequent betas are released at least two weeks after the first beta before Apple moves to a shorter release schedule later in the development cycle. Apple also typically releases public betas sometime in July, which usually carry the same build number as developer betas, but are released a few days after.
