Today marks the 16th anniversary of the original iPhone, which went on sale in 2007 on June 29, changing the world as we know it today in the process.
The original iPhone, colloquially referred to as the iPhone 2G, was announced six months earlier by the late Steve Jobs at Macworld on January 9, 2007. “This is a day I’ve been looking forward to for two-and-a-half years. Every once in a while, a revolutionary product comes along that changes everything” Heralded the late Apple co-founder as he took to the stage to publicly reveal the iPhone for the very first time. “Today, Apple is going to reinvent the phone,” added Jobs, before describing the sci-fi-like gadget as an “iPod, a phone, an internet mobile communicator.”
The iPhone is without a doubt one of the most successful consumer products ever in history, second only to the Rubik’s cube. Nowadays, Apple ships approximately 250 million iPhones every year, totaling a cool 1.5 billion iPhone units since the device first went on sale 16 years ago.

It’s hard to imagine what digital life was like before the iPhone, as the device changed how we interact with technology forever. Despite lacking at-the-time fairly standard features such as a removable battery and 3G communication, the iPhone went on to be a raging success with critics and consumers alike. It only took the iPhone 74 days to sell its first 1 million units, a figure that the iPod achieved nearly two years after it went on sale. Today, Apple is estimated to sell 1 million iPhones every three days or so.
