There is a serious possibility that Chinese display maker BOE could completely miss out on fulfilling any iPhone 15 display panels order for the remainder of 2023, according to a new industry analysis reported by the Korean-language website The Elec.
The report quotes a research seminar focused on the latest developments in the OLED and microdisplays industry. The seminar was held on July 5 in South Korea, where UBI Research analyst Yoon Dae-jeong proclaimed that BOE is unable to begin production of its iPhone 15 panels order in August due to persistent manufacturing issues. Yoon adds that BOE will have another chance to deliver panels in October if it can get its production up to speed, but the company is at serious risk of not being able to deliver any display panels to Apple for the remainder of 2023.
The Elec earlier reported in February that BOE was set to miss out on the initial batch of iPhone 15 panels order which already began last month in June. BOE was meant to produce OLED panels for the base iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus models, but it now seems that the Chinese manufacturer has handed over whatever display panels it had partially produced to Samsung Display to finalize their production, adds the report.

iPhone 15 display supply mix
Samsung Display is set to be responsible for the lion’s share of OLED panels supplied for the iPhone 15 lineup in 2023, adds Yoon. The analyst predicts that Samsung Display will deliver around 120 million panel units, compared to 35 million units from LG Display. Samsung will assemble OLED panels for the entire iPhone 15 lineup, whereas LG will limit its supply to just the high-end iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max.
Apple is expected to bring its Dynamic Island feature to its entire iPhone 15 lineup to be released later this year. Dynamic Island provides a new way to display system alerts as well as bite-sized information and interaction with many default and third-party apps via Live Activities. The feature is currently limited to the company’s high-end iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro Max devices.
