Apple’s future iMac strategy has been detailed in a new report, including an all-new 32-inch size in addition to a much-needed upgrade to the current 24-inch model. The larger iMac is not going to be released anytime soon with the company targeting a release date no earlier than next year, according to Bloomberg‘s Mark Gurman in his latest Power On newsletter.
In his newsletter, Gurman reports that Apple is “experimenting” with what would be its largest iMac to date, including one model in testing with a display that measures roughly 32 inches. Last week, Gurman reported that Apple was working on iMacs with bigger than 30-inch screens, and today’s report offer a more concrete display size. However, the larger iMac is unlikely to hit the market “before the end of 2024” with a real possibility of slipping to 2025, as Gurman reiterates the machine’s early development stage.
Apple always had intentions to launch an iMac bigger than the current 24-inch model, adds Gurman. The company allegedly toyed with the idea of releasing a “larger-sized version” of the current 24-inch iMac, but it is unclear why Apple opted not to do so, as there is still only one iMac size with Apple silicon available to customers. Historically, Apple had two iMac sizes, as the last Intel-equipped machines came in at 21-inch and 27-inch models.

Gurman also reiterates Apple’s plan to finally update the current 24-inch iMac with newer Apple silicon by early 2024. The company will upgrade its all-in-one machine with the yet-to-be-announced M3 chip, representing a big leap from the nearly two-year-old M1. Gurman also expects the M3 24-inch iMac to be one of “Apple’s first M3-based devices,” as the company is actively working to upgrade most of its Mac lineup with the M3 chip and its derivatives throughout next year.
