Apple has recently announced the expansion of its Tap to Pay feature on iPhone to the United Kingdom. The feature allows merchants to set up compatible iPhone models to act as a payment terminal with no additional hardware, accepting contactless payments through credit and debit cards in addition to Apple Pay.
Tap to Pay on iPhone is available for UK-based third-party developers and payment platforms to incorporate into their iOS apps. Revolut and Tyl by NatWest are the first platforms to sign up for the feature, offering it to their UK business customers. Apple states that additional UK partners plan to offer Tap to Pay soon including Ayden, Dojo, myPOS, Stripe, SumUp, Viva Wallet, Worldline, and Zettle by PayPal. Tap to Pay on iPhone will also expand to Apple Store locations across the UK in the coming weeks.
We’ve seen Tap to Pay on iPhone transform the checkout experience for so many different types of businesses, and we’re thrilled to now support merchants across the U.K. by offering an easy, secure, and private way to accept contactless payments using the power, security, and convenience of iPhone, with no additional hardware needed. Small and medium-sized businesses have long played a vital role in the U.K. economy, and alongside payment platforms, app developers, and payment networks, we’re making it easier than ever for U.K. businesses to seamlessly accept contactless payments and continue to grow their business.

NFC technology securely processes the payment, and no additional hardware is required. With Tap to Pay on iPhone, businesses throughout the UK can accept payments from any location, expanding the reach of Apple Pay to almost every business, regardless of size.
Tap to Pay on iPhone ensures the security and privacy of customers’ payment data, employing the same technology found in Apple Pay. All transactions conducted through Tap to Pay on iPhone are encrypted and processed using the Secure Element. Similar to Apple Pay, Apple does not have access to information regarding the purchases made or any of the buyers’ data.
The UK is the fourth region to receive Tap to Pay on iPhone after initially launching in the United States in February 2022. Apple launched Tap to Pay on iPhone in Taiwan and Australia earlier this year in April and May, respectively.
