Apple is reportedly working to bring macOS Sonoma’s new Game Mode to iOS 17 and iPadOS 17, according to unearthed code found in the just-released iOS 17 beta 4 (via 9to5Mac).
According to 9to5Mac, Apple has apparently ported over some frameworks necessary to run Game Mode on macOS Sonoma to the newest betas of iOS 17 and iPadOS 17. Apple never officially announced the new feature as part of iOS 17 during its WWDC 2023 keynote held last month, but the new revelation hints that the company may have been experimenting with bringing over the new feature to iPhones and iPads.
Even if Apple decides against supporting Game Mode on iOS 17, the company could elect to make select features of the new mode available as part of the upcoming major iPhone software release. Moreover, it makes sense for Apple to release the feature for the iPad first before the iPhone, taking full advantage of the tablet’s Mac-grade Apple silicon chips as the company makes a strong case for gaming on its platforms.

Game Mode was announced at WWDC 2023 as part of macOS Sonoma. The new feature dramatically improves gaming performance on the Mac, allocating more CPU and GPU resources to games instead of background tasks. Bluetooth latency is greatly improved for wireless gaming controllers and AirPods, ensuring a streamlined video and audio experience. Game developers won’t need to update their games to support Game Mode, as all of its aspects are inherent to macOS, and the mode can be enabled with a single click.
