Apple today confirmed at its “Wonderlust” event that iOS 17 and iPadOS 17 will both be released to the public simultaneously for all supported iPhone and iPad models on Monday, September 18.
The company is returning to the long-held tradition of releasing iOS and iPadOS major updates simultaneously after last year’s delay of iPadOS 16 to an October release along with macOS Ventura.
Apple first provided a first look at iOS 17 and iPadOS 17 in June, and since then, both updates have been subjected to diligent beta testing by both app developers and participants in the public beta program over the past few months.

iOS 17 New Features
iOS 17 introduces a revamped Phone and calling experience. Now, you have the ability to design personalized Contact Posters that people see when you give them a phone call. Contact Posters can be customized with a personal picture or a Memoji, a selection of fonts in different colors, and more. Contact Posters can be used within the default Phone app as well as in third-party applications.
Live Voicemail shows a live text transcription of received voicemail when you can’t pick up an incoming phone call. FaceTime gains the highly-requested ability to leave a voice or video message when you can’t pick up a FaceTime call. It also adds new live Reactions like balloons, fireworks, confetti, and hearts that are activated with simple in-air hand gestures.
iOS 17 also introduces StandBy, which offers a new experience for getting bite-sized information from Live Activities, calls, widgets, notifications, and Siri. Apple suggests that StandBy is best used on a nightstand, kitchen, or desk. StandBy can display widgets, Smart Stacks, photos, different clock styles, and bigger notifications.
On the iPhone 14 Pro, StandBy will always be activated when the phone is placed horizontally thanks to its Always-On Display. On iPhone models without an Always-On Display, StandBy will show information when new information is received or when the user touches the screen. Additionally, Home Screen widgets now offer interactive buttons and actions.
iOS 17 also adds nifty quality-of-life updates including multiple timers, improved keyboard autocorrect, offline maps, locking Safari private tabs with Face ID, autofill verification codes from Mail, and much more.
iPadOS 17 New Features
iPadOS 17 introduces many of the features available on iOS 17, in addition to a few more iPad-specific additions. There is now support for Lock Screen widgets, which are placed on the left side of the screen when placed horizontally. Live Activities on the Lock Screen are also finally supported.
iPadOS 17 also brings the Health app to the iPad for the very first time, providing users with the ability to view their health data on the iPad’s expansive display. The app’s layout has been specifically tailored to make the most of the iPad’s larger screen, featuring a new Favorites view and offering insights into health data through Trends, Highlights, and interactive charts with in-depth details.
iPadOS 17 is also full of smaller enhancements to the iPad experience, like much-needed improvements to Stage Manager, a new full-width PDF view in Notes with real-time collaboration, and new drawing tools on Freeform.
