A fire has suspended iPhone 15 production at a plant for Apple supplier Pegatron in Chennai, India, following what officials are describing as a “spark incident,” according to local media reports.
The fire was reported on Monday but initially occurred late Sunday night on the first floor of the building due to a short circuit, according to the Times of India. Local fire officials and first responders were on the scene and put out the fire in 45 minutes, but iPhone production was suspended as of Sunday night and Monday.
On Tuesday, Reuters reported that Pegatron had informed employees not to come to work, suspending production for the second day in a row. A Pegatron spokesperson previously said that there were no injuries, casualties, or damage to the factory floor and that the incident was being investigated.

This specific plant in India is expected to be part of India’s iPhone 15 production supply chain. Apple is producing iPhone 15 models in India in unison with Chinese-made models. An industry source told Reuters that the Chennai plant has produced 8,000 to 12,000 iPhones daily in recent months.
This specific plant is thought to exclusively produce iPhone 14 Plus and iPhone 15 Plus models, but despite the suspension of production, stock is not expected to be significantly impacted. The iPhone 15 Plus, in particular, has been readily available in stores, with Apple’s higher-end iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max proving to be the most popular.
The iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus introduce several improved features compared to their predecessors, including an updated front design that now includes the Dynamic Island. The updated entry-level models also include the same 48MP as the high-end Pro iPhones and improved performance with the A16 Bionic chip.
