Overheating issues that have been plaguing a limited number of iPhone 15 Pro units are likely the result of certain design choices that Apple chose to trim the devices’ weight as much as possible, according to trusted Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo.
Kuo voiced his latest analysis in a new Medium post today, in which he blames the apparent overheating issues affecting Apple’s latest Pro iPhone models as the result of “the compromises made in the thermal system design to achieve a lighter weight.” More specifically, Apple reduced the heat dissipation area within the device’s internals. Coupled with titanium’s worse thermal efficiency and dissipation properties compared to aluminum, overheating is more pronounced compared to the base iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus.
Many observers predicted the new A17 Pro chip as the main culprit behind the iPhone 15 Pro’s excessive heating, putting the touted efficiency gains of TSMC’s new 3nm node process in question. Kuo dismisses that notion, adding that Apple might be forced to issue a new software update to deal with overheating if the problem persists. However, any notable improvements might be limited unless the company is willing to lower the A17 Pro’s performance by decreasing its power draw in a more aggressive bid to control overheating.

Kuo warns that the issue might have significant implications if it is widespread and not addressed in time by Apple, adding that it “could negatively impact shipments over the product life cycle of the iPhone 15 Pro series.”
Reports have been mounting over the iPhone 15 Pro getting too hot to even touch during seemingly light usage such as browsing social media apps, taking a few pictures, and even charging. The issue might become more pronounced in the future with the imminent launch of AAA game titles on the iPhone 15 Pro such as Resident Evil Village and Death Stranding.
