Apple reportedly built a modified iPhone 15 Pro Max model fitted with the company’s custom 5G modem for internal testing purposes, according to new information sourced by MacRumors.
According to the publication, the company is going full steam ahead with the development and testing of its ambitious project to build its first in-house cellular modem. Apple is allegedly deploying prototypes of its modem chips on two unannounced iPhone models: a next-generation iPhone SE and a “derivative of the iPhone 15 Pro Max.”
Not much is known about the modified iPhone 15 Pro Max, save for a new “D84S” codename that is also derived from the “D84” production moniker of the publicly available model that is now making its way to the hands of millions of users worldwide. The report doubles down on Apple’s original hope of deploying its custom modem across all models of the iPhone 16 lineup, but those plans could be scrapped in favor of a later iPhone generation.

This is not the first time we hear of Apple stumbling to finalize its modem in time for the 2024 iPhone lineup. A previous report from the Wall Street Journal describes the company’s latest prototypes as being a few generations behind the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon modems in terms of size, heat output, and performance.
Qualcomm recently announced the extension of its modem supply deal with Apple until 2026. While the Cupertino company remains mum on the terms of the renewed deal, Qualcomm expects its modem chips to cover “smartphone launches in 2024, 2025, and 2026.”
