Apple could be working on a system of magnetically attached tips for an upcoming third-generation Apple Pencil, according to a new rumor circulating on X.
On X, leaker Majin Bu claims the company is readying a new mechanism to attach and remove drawing tips on the Apple Pencil. According to the rumor, the new system would comprise “interchangeable magnetic tips” that easily attach and detach from the iPad accessory, as opposed to the current screw-on design on the original and second-generation models.
The new mechanism would also enable specialized tips, adds the leaker. According to Majin Bu’s information, the company could come up with different tip designs that are more suitable for specific applications such as “drawing, technical drawing, and painting.” Bu provided three mockups of what specialized tips may look like, as they could come in different thicknesses and lengths.
Other information regarding an upgraded Apple Pencil – including design, price, and compatibility – remains unknown. The company could elect to keep the accessory’s current design for maximum compatibility with current iPad models, which wirelessly charges by being attached through magnets to the iPad’s side.
Apple already offers replacement tips in a pack of four as the current tips naturally wear out with regular use. The four-pack is available for $19 and is compatible with the original and second-generation Apple Pencil.
Apple Pencil 3 release date
Rumors surrounding the Apple Pencil are few and far between, but this piece of information suggests that the company is possibly preparing to upgrade one of the iPad’s key accessories that have remained untouched since the second-generation model was announced in 2018 alongside the then-new iPad Pro.
While the leaker has not indicated an expected release date, it is safe to assume that an upgraded Pencil will be announced alongside a new iPad Pro, which is expected to be overhauled with an all-new design, OLED displays, the M3 chip, and more by next year.
