A new sketchy rumor claims that the upcoming iMac will actually launch with the current-generation M2 chip and not the M3 as widely expected earlier. The claim is courtesy of Mac Otakara.
According to the Japanese website, Apple will equip the upcoming iMac with the M2 and M2 Pro chip for the first time in an iMac. This would represent a big step up for the all-in-one desktop, which is currently offered with just the base M1 chip without any other higher-end M-series processor. Mac Otakara also claims that Apple will significantly boost the connectivity features of the iMac by offering Bluetooth 5.3, Wi-Fi 6E, and even support for Thunderbolt 4.
Other sources including Bloomberg and Ming-Chi Kuo maintain that the next iMac will be equipped with the yet-to-be-announced M3 chip, so it remains unclear what Mac Otakara is basing its information on. Expected release dates for the iMac and other M3-equipped Macs have ranged from as early as this month to sometime in the first half of 2024.

In the meantime, shipping estimates for certain custom configurations of the iMac are showing delays as far back as late November on Apple’s online store. Recent reports have also indicated that Apple is preparing to accept trade-ins of more Mac models in the near future, suggesting the imminent release of new machines
Kuo recently stated that no new MacBooks with the M3 will be released this year, leaving the iMac as a plausible candidate for the first Mac with the next-gen Apple silicon chip. It’s entirely possible that Apple may have run into production issues with the M3-equipped iMac, settling on a stopgap solution with the M2 chip for a machine that hasn’t been updated in over two and a half years.
