Apple is allegedly working on a new full-sized HomePod model that could feature a fully-fledged LCD display at the top, according to new information shared by 9to5Mac and a leaker on X.
According to the publication, a next-generation HomePod model is at an “advanced-stage prototype” testing phase at Apple, but a release date is yet to be clear. The prototype is codenamed B720 and features a new touchscreen LCD panel at the top where the current status light and volume controls are placed.
Leaked images of the prototype have also made their way on X through a series of images shared by “Kosutami.” According to the account, current prototypes feature an entirely new glass component at the top to accommodate the rumored touchscreen. The prototype shown is also said to be based on the current second-generation HomePod design, suggesting that this prototype is at least more recent than the current HomePod model which was released in February 2023.

9to5Mac also reports that Apple has already begun rewriting some code in tvOS 17 to accommodate new display aspect ratios and formats. The move is interesting since almost all TVs today feature a standard 16:9 aspect ratio, and Apple has reportedly already finished modifying its tvOS Apple Music and Podcasts apps with the new display accommodations. The new code also suggests that the reported HomePod touchscreen will be able to handle notifications, answer phone calls, and receive messages.
It’s still unclear when Apple plans to release the depicted HomePod prototype, if ever. Recent reports suggested that the company is working to expand its TV & Home efforts to launch new display-equipped products, and today’s report is one more confirmation that Apple is steadfast in its goal.
