Apple plans to introduce at least four new models for its AirPods lineup including updates to entry-level AirPods, AirPods Pro, and AirPods Max. Three new models are set to be released next year, while a redesigned next-gen AirPods Pro will come out in 2025, reads a new Bloomberg article.
Apple will reportedly introduce two fourth-generation editions of the entry-level AirPods that will simultaneously replace the current second-generation and third-generation models. Both fourth-generation models will introduce better audio quality and a new design that will resemble both the current third-generation model and AirPods Pro. Both models will also have short stems with an improved fit, but no replaceable tips that come as part of the AirPods Pro.
To differentiate both fourth-generation AirPods models, the high-end one will reportedly come with active noise cancellation, a feature that so far has been exclusive to the AirPods Pro and AirPods Max. The charging case for the high-end model will also get another exclusive upgrade in the form of a new charging case with speakers for Find My alerts, just like the current AirPods Pro. The Lightning port on the charging case will also be fully phased out in favor of USB-C.

On the other hand, Apple is planning a bigger overhaul for the AirPods Pro in 2025. The in-ear headphones are expected to gain a new charging case in addition to a new design, which has largely remained unchanged since its introduction in 2019. The third-generation AirPods Pro is also said to gain a new “H3” audio processing chip that will replace the current H2. Apple also continues to work on health-related features for the AirPods Pro.
AirPods Max will finally receive an update in 2024, adds the report. As expected, the refreshed pair of over-the-ear headphones will do away with the Lightning which will be replaced by a USB-C port for charging. Apple also plans to introduce new colors, but no other noteworthy features are expected despite the pair still being stuck on the old H1 chip.
The exact release dates of each model remain unclear, but should get more concrete soon enough as we approach the new year.
