Apple just released watchOS 10.1 for everyone to download, and it brings a few new features to all compatible Apple Watches, including a new double tap gesture for the Series 9 and Ultra 2, and NameDrop for all models.

Double tap gesture

The double tap gesture lets you control your Apple Watch without having to use the display, interact with the Digital Crown, or press any buttons. To use it, tap your index finger and thumb together twice. You can customize what the double tap gesture does in the Settings app, including the ability to open your favorite apps, start a workout, take a screenshot, play and pause music, and answering or ending a call.

NameDrop

NameDrop is a new way to share contact information with other people who have an Apple Watch or iPhone. To use NameDrop, simply open the Contacts app on your Apple Watch and tap the “Share” button next to the contact you want to share. Then, bring your watch close to the other person’s watch or iPhone and wait for the NameDrop animation to appear. Once the animation is complete, the other person will have received your contact information.

The update also includes a number of other bug fixes and improvements. It’s available for Apple Watch Series 4 and later starting today, and requires iPhone XS or later running iOS 17. The double tap gesture is enabled by default on Apple Watch Series 9 and Apple Watch Ultra 2 running watchOS 10.1, with no additional setup required. It can be disabled in Settings app.
