Apple today began releasing the first beta for iOS 17.2 to registered developers. iOS 17.2 beta 1 comes just one day after the company released iOS 17.1 and other software updates to the public. A public version of this beta is expected sometime this week.
iOS 17.2 is likely to introduce the Journal app which Apple promised to be available before the end of 2023. With Journal, users can securely and privately jot down and record diary entries of life events throughout their day complete with rich details like photos, music, audio recordings, and more.
Journal is a new iPhone app that helps users reflect on everyday moments and special events in their lives. To help inspire a user’s journal entry, personalized suggestions can be intelligently curated from a user’s recent activity, such as photos, people, places, workouts, and more, and scheduled notifications can help build a journaling habit. With the ability to lock the app, the use of on-device processing, and end-to-end encryption, Journal is built to protect a user’s privacy and ensure no one — including Apple — can access a user’s entries.

Last year, Apple released iOS 16.2 in December, and it’s likely that the company will follow through with that schedule with the release of iOS 17.2, thus fulfilling its promise of Journal making its way to iPhone users by this year’s end.
Apple also released the following new betas across the board:
- iPadOS 17.2 beta 1
- macOS Sonoma 14.2 beta 1
- watchOS 10.2 beta 1
- tvOS 17.2 beta 1
How to install iOS 17.2 beta 1
Last March, Apple introduced a new method to install betas. Now, devices enrolled with a linked Apple Developer Program account or those who signed up with their Apple ID on Apple Developer will see a new menu under Settings -> General -> Software Update that allows users to opt into receiving beta updates. Devices that aren’t enrolled and linked to an Apple Developer account won’t see the menu and therefore aren’t able to install any new beta.
We will keep this article updated with any additional changes that we find in the first beta of iOS 17.2, including references to new features or unreleased products.
