Apple is aware of a bug affecting its latest Apple Watch Series 9 and Ultra 2 which causes their screens to register false touches. The company shared its awareness of the issue in an internal memo with Apple Authorized Service Providers earlier this week and seen by MacRumors.
According to the obtained memo, a limited number of Series 9 and Ultra 2 owners are experiencing what is described as false touches on the displays of their Apple Watch units. Apple also describes the apparent phenomenon as “ghost touches,” where the affected models begin registering taps on the display without any interaction from users.
The memo also describes the screen issue as being significant enough to the point where the affected Apple Watch units initiate phone calls on their own with no user interaction and has also limited the ability of users to enter the passcode for their Watch devices. In the meantime, Apple is urging users to keep their watchOS software up to date as it remains unclear whether the actual hardware is the culprit behind the issue.
While conducting an investigation, Apple has advised Authorized Service Providers’ technicians against repairing affected Apple Watch models. Instead, they are instructed to recommend customers experiencing the issue perform a force restart on their Apple Watch. This can be done by simultaneously holding down the Digital Crown and the side button for 10 seconds until the Apple logo appears.
