iOS 18 will reportedly support all the same iPhone models that can run iOS 17 in addition to the upcoming iPhone 16 generation, according to information shared on X (formerly Twitter) by a private account that was first spotted by MacRumors.
According to the report, the post on X explicitly claimed that iOS 18 will support the iPhone XR as a minimum. This likely entails the iPhone XS and the iPhone XS Max, since all three iPhone models are powered by the same A12 Bionic chip. The report asserts that the unnamed source of this rumor, spotted by MacRumors contributor Aaron Perris, has provided accurate information in the past, although Supercharged could not independently verify this claim.
If the rumor proves correct, iOS 18 will continue to support all iPhone models that can be upgraded to iOS 17. As a reminder, iOS 17 dropped support for the iPhone X, iPhone 8, and iPhone 8 Plus, which all came with the A11 Bionic chip. Apple likely dropped support for these devices due to the iPhone 8’s RAM capacity of just 2GB, which is more of a limiting factor than the device’s Apple silicon chip.

Apple will reveal iOS 18 alongside other major software releases at WWDC 2024 in June. The update is rumored to usher in a wave of generative AI features for the iPhone as Apple plans to catch up to AI offerings from its rivals. The update is also said to introduce considerable UI design changes across the board inspired by visionOS. The breadth of changes heading to iOS 18 has made some people within the company refer to the update as one of the biggest in iPhone’s history.
