The upcoming iPad Pro with OLED display could be the first iPad to include an option for a matte display finish like Apple’s desktop monitors, according to a new rumor circulating on the Chinese microblogging website Weibo.
According to the leaker “Instant Digital,” Apple will allow customers to configure the OLED iPad Pro with a matte finish that reduces glare atop the display glass. The leaker is likely referring to Apple’s nano-texture glass coating as an additional option when ordering the Studio Display and Pro Display XDR. The specialized texture is made by etching the display’s glass surface, which in turn scatters light and reduces glare and reflections in bright environments.
The purported matte display option for the OLED iPad Pro will also feature a special filter to block certain light that may irritate the eye, the leaker adds. The iPad Pro’s matte display specifications include -4° to +29° of haze, with a possibility that the matte display could also be an option for the upcoming iPad Air. Apple will continue to offer a glossy finish as normal for the OLED iPad Pro, and the matte option will likely incur an additional cost at the point of purchase.

The OLED iPad Pro’s display is said to feature other rumored enhancements, such as being one of the few commercially available OLED panels with a dual-stack tandem design that combines two layers of pixels. This design makes OLED panels much brighter while achieving a longer lifespan, which is desirable for products on longer replacement cycles like tablets and laptops. OLED panels are typically thinner than their LCD counterparts, which could make the new iPad Pro shed a few millimeters of thickness compared to its predecessor.
Beyond the display, the OLED iPad Pro will likely feature the M3 chip and landscape orientation for the TrueDepth camera system including Face ID and the front-facing camera. Apple is also working on updated accessories like a new Apple Pencil with support for the Find My network and a new Magic Keyboard to make the iPad look more laptop-like when docked. The new iPad Pro and iPad Air lineups are expected to be announced by the end of March.
