Winnipeg, Canada authorities have charged a former United Parcel Service (UPS) worker with theft and related offenses following an investigation into the disappearance of electronic devices (via Global News).

Court documents allege Orville Martirez Beltrano, a sorting supervisor at a UPS warehouse on King Edward Street, misappropriated approximately 866 Apple products valued at over $1.3 million between July 2023 and January 2024.

Investigators believe Beltrano sold the stolen items on Kijiji, a Canadian online marketplace, receiving payment through cash or electronic transfers. Financial records presented in court reportedly indicate cash deposits exceeding $232,000 made into Beltrano’s bank accounts during the relevant period.

Beltrano was arrested by Winnipeg police in January 2024 and charged with several offenses, including theft exceeding a set amount, theft under a set amount, possession of stolen goods exceeding a set amount, and possession of proceeds of crime.

A search warrant executed at Beltrano’s residence and vehicle yielded $9,000 in cash, a MacBook laptop, and jewelry valued at over $9,100. According to court documents, Beltrano reportedly confessed to stealing Apple products from the warehouse and possessing the recovered jewelry during a video-recorded police interview. He allegedly admitted the seized cash originated from the sales of the missing devices.

The court documents claim Beltrano used the proceeds from selling the allegedly stolen goods to purchase a house in Winnipeg’s South Pointe neighborhood for $630,000 in January 2024. Additionally, the funds are alleged to have been used to pay off the remaining debt on a white Audi hatchback purchased in 2021 for $60,000.

Law enforcement is seeking court approval to seize Beltrano’s house, Audi vehicle, the seized cash, and the contents of his bank accounts as part of the ongoing investigation.
