Apple is preparing numerous new generative AI features for iOS 18 at WWDC 2024, and one new feature enabled by AI will see the iPhone’s keyboard gain the ability to create custom emojis based on what users are typing, reports Bloomberg‘s Mark Gurman.

In the latest edition of the weekly Power On newsletter, Gurman outlines what to expect from Apple AI-wise with iOS 18 as WWDC 2024 edges closer. One new feature being reported for the first time is AI-generated emojis that will be suggested based on what users are currently typing. The unique emojis will be intelligently suggested as users are typing, and will go beyond the current crop of standard emojis preloaded as part of the iOS keyboard.

One standout feature will bring generative AI to emojis. The company is developing software that can create custom emojis on the fly, based on what users are texting. That means you’ll suddenly have an all-new emoji for any occasion, beyond the catalog of options that Apple currently offers on the iPhone and other devices.

Beyond this feature, generative AI on iOS 18 will prioritize features such as creating summaries for missed notifications, smart reply suggestions for emails and text messages, better search results for Safari and Spotlight, and an LLM-powered Siri.

Apple is also working on enhanced audio transcription in apps like Voice Memos and Notes in addition to AI-powered retouch tools for Photos. Beyond AI, Apple is planning a few user interface changes for iOS 18, including more freedom for app icon arrangement on the Home Screen and updates to numerous first-party apps.
