Apple is setting the stage to announce its foray into artificial intelligence with iOS 18 in just under two weeks. Yet, most of these features will require the latest iPhone 15 Pro in addition to iPads and Macs with the M1 chip, reports Bloomberg‘s Mark Gurman.

As part of his report regarding a revamped Siri for iOS 18, Gurman believes that most iOS 18 AI features Apple plans to run on-device will be limited to the latest iPhone 15 Pro with the A17 Pro chip. That doesn’t necessarily mean older iPhone models and the base iPhone 15 devices won’t have access to iOS 18 AI features. Yet, their scope might be more limited as they will require an active internet connection for cloud AI processing.

The vast majority of iOS 18 AI features are said to be processed locally for privacy and performance considerations. However, recent reports indicate that a growing chunk of incoming AI capabilities will be processed online via dedicated data centers powered by Apple silicon chips. Apple will maintain the privacy of users’ data even in its data centers by relying on the Secure Enclave present on all of its processors.

On the iPad and Mac side, hardware limitations aren’t thought to be as restrictive as they are on the iPhone. The report states that on-device AI features will require a minimum of the nearly four-year-old M1 chip, meaning that all Apple silicon Mac models and most recent iPad devices will support local AI processing. Almost all iPad models released in recent years will run AI locally, save for the iPad mini and 10th-generation iPad, with both still relying on the A15 Bionic and A14 Bionic respectively.

Apple will incorporate AI across every corner of iOS 18 and other software platforms set to be announced in under two weeks at WWDC 2024. AI features will span Safari, Spotlight Search, Messages, Photos, notifications summary, voice transcription, and much more.
