The iOS 18 Mail app is set to be one of the bigger apps to take advantage of AI features Apple plans to introduce across the board as part of the upcoming iPhone update, according to new details shared by AppleInsider.

Search is likely to receive the bulk of AI improvements across Apple’s software platforms at WWDC 2024, and search within the iOS 18 Mail app is no exception. Per the report, search results performed within Mail will surface additional information from elsewhere including Contacts, local documents, and locations for a richer experience.

Apple is also working on a new “Smart Replies” functionality for the iOS 18 Mail app, with the feature set to make its way to additional apps like Messages and Siri. Smart Replies will automatically generate email replies using AI based on the current context. AI-powered text generation and writing assistance will make its way to Siri, empowering users to direct the virtual assistant and other apps to craft text-based responses with support for tone adjustments.

This should allow users to change the overall tone of text on the fly. For example, users can ask Siri to make an email reply sound more professional or friendly as they see fit. The report adds that AI writing assistance is supported via a system-wide framework, likely meaning that this feature can be used in just about every text field in iOS.

AI text analysis will also enable better email categorization by subject on the iOS 18 Mail app. Incoming emails will be automatically classified into different categories, making it easier for the app to emphasize time-sensitive or important emails that users would otherwise miss. Mail and other apps within iOS 18 will also support different levels of text summarization for multiple use cases, with the software reportedly being able to summarize emails, messages, notifications, notes, news articles, and user-provided text.
