Apple has reportedly held talks with Meta to integrate its AI models as part of Apple Intelligence in what would be a similar arrangement to OpenAI’s ChatGPT integration with Siri and iOS 18, reports the Wall Street Journal.
Per the report, Meta hopes to take advantage of the iPhone’s massive reach and distribution to expose more users to its generative AI models. Integrating with Apple Intelligence could help Meta push the popularity of its AI models further, and it could even generate income by enticing iPhone users to pay for more premium AI features.
Like Apple’s partnership with OpenAI to bring ChatGPT integration to Apple Intelligence, a potential deal involving Meta is unlikely to involve one party paying the other upfront. Rather than a direct payment from Apple, Meta hopes to generate income by switching free users of its AI models to paid ones. On the other hand, a deal with Meta or other external AI providers would give Apple some leverage over OpenAI as it remains the only public partner with Apple Intelligence once iOS 18 launches later this year.

In addition to talks with Meta, Apple is said to be discussing similar arrangements with other AI providers like Anthropic and Perplexity. A potential deal with Google for its Gemini model remains on the cards, though it’s unclear if those talks have progressed since their apparent faltering earlier this year.
