Meta has reportedly scrapped plans to release a high-end Quest headset that would have rivaled Apple Vision Pro due to pricing concerns, according to a new report from The Information.
Meta planned for the shelved Quest headset to feature cutting-edge technology to take on Apple Vision Pro, including the adoption of micro-OLED panels. However, Meta decided to abandon work on the headset which was scheduled to launch in 2027 following a product review meeting earlier this week involving CEO Mark Zuckerberg.
The mixed-reality headset was reportedly going to sell for around $1,000, significantly lower than the $3,499 price tag of Apple Vision Pro. However, selling the planned headset at this price while incorporating micro-OLED technology seemed unviable. To recall, it costs Apple around $500 just for the dual 4K micro-OLED displays in Vision Pro. On the other hand, Meta continues to work on a successor to the Quest 3 headset, which could launch by 2026 at a similar price tag to the current model.

Apple Vision Pro has reportedly suffered from underwhelming sales in recent months following a strong start to its debut in February. Since then, Apple has released the headset in more countries between June and July, including China, Japan, Singapore, the United Kingdom, Australia, and Canada.
Apple also previewed visionOS 2 at WWDC 2024, the first major software release for Vision Pro which is thought to launch in September alongside iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and watchOS 11.
