With today’s iOS 18.1 beta 3, a new Apple Intelligence feature is available for developers to test. Clean Up, the Photos app feature to remove unwanted objects in images is the latest Apple Intelligence feature to be enabled on iOS 18.1 beta.
Clean Up is one of the several Apple Intelligence features the company showcased at the WWDC 2024 event last June. Clean Up can be accessed by entering edit mode on any image with a dedicated button at the bottom of the screen. The tool allows users to tap, circle, or brush over unwanted objects in the background of the selected image, after which Clean Up will attempt to remove the picked-out object.
Clean Up relies on multiple machine learning models to detect distractions and identify the precise edges of objects anywhere in the photo. The feature works well in its current beta state, with very realistic generative fill to occupy the space left by erased objects. Clean Up works with all images in a user’s photo library whether they were taken on an iPhone or elsewhere.
