Apple has reportedly let go of around 100 employees from its Services division as it reconsiders certain aspects of its strategy for the fast-growing sector, according to a new report from Bloomberg‘s Mark Gurman.
The move, described as “rare,” primarily affects the teams responsible for Apple Books and Apple News and has spanned some engineering positions within the Services division. Apple no longer sees the Apple Books app and the associated Bookstore as sources for driving growth, and as such has decided to cut down on their respective teams. Some affected employees also cross-worked in other teams within the Services division, affecting those groups in the process.
Nevertheless, the Books app across Apple’s software platforms is set to gain new features over time, but perhaps less regularly. Affected jobs also include the Apple News team, but Bloomberg states that Apple’s strategy for its News app and News+ service will remain largely unaffected by this move. Apple informed the affected employees in its Services division that they have 60 days to find a job at another part of the company before being permanently terminated.

The layoffs represent the fourth round of job cuts at Apple in 2024. However, they remain much less significant than rival companies which have let go of thousands of employees over the last couple of years amid economic uncertainties stemming from the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent lockdowns.
Earlier layoffs at Apple affected its now-canceled autonomous EV vehicle project, shutting down an AI team based in San Diego, and letting go of hundreds of hardware engineers after scaling down its efforts on the microLED display technology.
