Benchmark results for the new iPad mini have begun surfacing on Geekbench a few days after Apple announced the device. The benchmarks confirm the presence of a binned version of the A17 Pro chip from the iPhone 15 Pro and 8GB of RAM for Apple Intelligence support.
The new iPad mini carries the model identifier “iPad16,2” and shows the presence of the A17 Pro chip with six cores running at a maximum frequency of 3.8 GHz for the performance cores. This matches the iPhone 15 Pro CPU specs, yet the GPU paints a different picture. Per benchmarks, the new iPad mini appears to be limited to a 5-core GPU instead of the 6-core GPU on the iPhone 15 Pro.
The new iPad mini’s CPU benchmark scores appear to sit around 2,800 points, a respectable increase over the previous generation’s average of about 2,100 points. Multi-core CPU performance is slightly below 7,000 points, compared to the previous iPad mini’s average of 5,300. GPU performance sees a larger jump, with the new iPad mini reaching a score of just under 26,000 points compared to the 2021 model’s average of 19,500.

The benchmarks also confirm the presence of 8GB of RAM on the new iPad mini, a significant increase from the previous model’s 4GB capacity. The increase is likely necessary for Apple Intelligence support, which Apple is touting as the main selling point of the new device and appears to be the minimum amount of memory for Apple’s AI suite.
More details about the new device’s performance and other features should be revealed as it begins to reach customers’ hands on Wednesday, October 2023.
