Apple appears to be readying new versions of its Mac accessories, namely the Magic Mouse 2, Magic Keyboard, and Magic Trackpad 2, according to new code strings found in the iOS 18.1 Release Candidate (via MacRumors).
According to different code strings, Apple is preparing new versions of the Magic Mouse 2 and Magic Trackpad 2, as well as multiple iterations of the Magic Keyboard with multiple add-ins like the number pad and Touch ID, which are available as options for the accessory. While the iOS 18.1 code doesn’t reveal what’s new with the updated accessories, they will likely feature USB-C ports across the board as Apple transitions away from its proprietary Lightning connector.
Apple has nearly completed its transition away from Lightning as all of the recent AirPods models, including the new AirPods 4 and the updated AirPods Max, now feature a USB-C port for charging and other uses. The last holdout remains the Mac accessories, which were strongly expected to be fitted with USB-C ports as far back as last year’s “Scary Fast” Mac event, which didn’t happen.
Apple has another fitting opportunity to finally update the Mac accessories soon as the company is said to announce the first Mac models with the M4 chip before the end of October. As a reminder, the MacBook Pro and iMac are expected to be refreshed with new Apple silicon, while the Mac mini is set to receive its first real redesign in nearly a decade.
