Tesla could soon release an official Apple Watch app that allows users to lock and unlock their vehicles through the smartwatch, according to code references in a recent update to the iOS app discovered by MacRumors.
Per the code, the Apple Watch could be used to remotely lock and unlock Tesla vehicles, effectively acting as a digital key. As pointed out by the report, there are several Apple Watch apps with this functionality, but all of them are built by third-party developers.
The carmaker’s CEO Elon Musk has enjoyed a rocky relationship with Apple and its CEO Tim Cook in the past. However, Musk seems to be willing to put those differences aside, officially allowing the Apple Watch and other products from the company to integrate with Tesla’s vehicles.

It remains to be seen when the Tesla Apple Watch app will be released, if ever. Companies often test many unreleased features, with only a few making it to final production. As such, the electric carmaker might never release an official Apple Watch with digital car key support, or delay it indefinitely.
