Apple’s upcoming smart home display will feature design cues from the iconic iMac G4 design released over 20 years ago, according to the latest edition of Bloomberg‘s Power On newsletter.
The smart home display will be released sometime next year and is part of Apple’s renewed smart home strategy. Per the report, the screen will be positioned at an angle atop a small hemispherical base. The display itself will feature a square aspect ratio and will roughly span the size of two iPhones next to one another. The device’s base could act as a speaker, effectively turning it into a HomePod with a screen.
The hemispherical base and the angled screen could make the device resemble the iconic iMac G4 first released in 2002. This design, otherwise known as the “sunflower iMac,” featured a hemispherical base where the motherboard and other components were located. The iMac G4’s display was mounted on a stainless steel arm that could swivel at 180 degrees. The arm could also be used to adjust the monitor’s tilt angle and height relative to the base.

Apple is expected to price its smart home display competitively, allowing users to buy multiple units and keep them in different rooms of a home. The device will run a new ‘homeOS’ with iPad-like apps and emphasis on FaceTime, Notes, Calendar, and video and photo consumption.
Beyond this smart home display, Apple is working on a more premium version with a robotic arm and a larger screen that can move automatically to follow and mimic a user’s movement. This high-end model will likely be priced around $1,000 with a tentative release schedule by 2026.
