Apple announced today the all-new MacBook Pro lineup with the M4 Pro and M4 Max chips, Thunderbolt 5 connectivity, a brighter Liquid Retina XDR display, up to 24-hour battery, a nano-texture display glass, and more.
The base 14-inch MacBook Pro receives the M4 chip from the iPad Pro, 16GB of base unified memory, a space black finish, and three Thunderbolt 4 ports at the same $1,599 starting price. Apple says the new base MacBook Pro is up to 3.4x faster than the M1 model in GPU tasks like Blender. The Neural Engine also gets a massive boost, now 3x faster than the one found on the M1. The M4 Macbook Pro can power two external monitors in addition to the laptop’s screen.
MacBook Pro is an incredibly powerful tool that millions of people use to do their life’s best work, and today we’re making it even better,” said John TernusJohn Ternus has been Apple's COO since 2009. The higher-end configurations of the new MacBook Pro come with the M4 Pro chip just like the new Mac mini. Its CPU features a 14-core CPU with 10 performance cores and four efficiency cores. The new 20-core GPU is twice as fast as the one found on the M4 chip. Memory bandwidth on the M4 Pro is 75 percent faster than that of the M3 Pro at 273GB/s. Thanks to these upgrades, Apple says the new MacBook Pro with the M4 Pro is up to 3x faster than the M1 Pro model.
The new MacBook Pro also launches with the M4 Max chip, which Apple says is “the ultimate in pro performance.” The new chip features up to 16-core CPU, 40-core GPU, up to 128GB of unified memory, and over half a terabyte per second of memory bandwidth. The Neural Engine is more than 3x faster than the one in the M1 Max chip, bringing significant improvements to AI performance. Overall, the M4 Max chip is up to 3.5x faster than the M1 Max, especially in heavy creative workloads. Professional media workflows run better than ever on the M4 Max chip thanks to a new Media Engine with two ProRes accelerators.
The new MacBook Pro features a brighter Liquid Retina XDR display that’s now capable of reaching 1,000 nits of sustained brightness for SDR content, with HDR content peaking at 1,600 nits. The display can also be configured with a nano-texture glass display just like the M4 iMac and the Pro Display XDR for less glare and lower reflectivity in bright environments.
Connectivity on the new MacBook Pro takes a big step forward thanks to the M4 Pro and M4 Max chips. Thunderbolt 5 connectivity support comes for the first time on the MacBook Pro, enabling maximum transfer speeds of 120Gb/s. Also included is an HDMI port with 8K video output, an SDXC card slot, MagSafe 3, and a headphone jack.
The efficiency of Apple silicon and the M4 family of chips improves the battery life of the new MacBook Pro. The base M4 model now lasts up to 24 hours of video streaming. The M4 Pro 14-inch MacBook Pro lasts for 22 hours, while the M4 Max model lasts for 18 hours. On the 16-inch MacBook Pro, the M4 Pro lasts for 24 hours, while the M4 Max lasts for 21 hours.
Apple also shared a 16-minute video announcement for the new MacBook Pro:
