iPhone users are upgrading to iOS 18.1 at a rate that’s twice as fast as iOS 17.1 last year thanks to the launch of Apple Intelligence features, according to CEO Tim Cook in a new CNBC interview.
Cook says that Apple is already receiving “great feedback” from iPhone users and developers with the launch of the iOS 18.1 update, which began rolling out three days ago. Cook also offered a rare insight into the adoption rates of the new update, showing that Apple Intelligence is capturing the attention of iPhone users even with limited features availability.
We’re getting great feedback from customers and developers already and a really early stat, which is only three days worth of data: Users are adopting iOS 18.1 at twice the rate that they adopted 17.1 in the year-ago quarter.

Apple released iOS 18.1 last Monday with the first Apple Intelligence features, including Writing Tools, Clean Up, notifications summaries, a new Siri UI with Type to Siri, Smart Replies, and Reduce Interruptions Focus mode. Apple Intelligence is only for the iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, and the entire iPhone 16 lineup.
The update also introduced some non-Apple Intelligence enhancements, including Control Center refinements, phone call recording, and hearing health features for AirPods Pro 2. Apple has also begun beta testing iOS 18.2, which will bring more Apple Intelligence capabilities like Genmoji, Image Playground, and ChatGPT integration.
